a bit less cliche outcome coulda been he failed but set up conditions for the thing to get submerged in a muddy sinkhole/quicksand. effectively disabling it for a long long time letting the spirits deal with it at their leisure.

... or the power of hate and spite letting him figure out a neat trick with water, ever get a cockroach wet then put it into a microwave? the resulting steam causes it to pop apart... if you put in dry you just get a roach disco in your microwave.

repercussions is a good sign of the author not taking one such skill lightly.

More importantly he can't do that by himself. So he can't just fire it off as a convenient magic. It's good to give a skill too powerful some serious handicap or powers scalling goes out of whack.
