the duchy is technically still ruled by the duke, but tadashi is the king of his own land and a duchy so he is a king, they commander was saying the duke cant drink probably because he is sstill recovering or something. It could also just be something the author didnt know of correctly and did infact call a kingdom a duchy instead.

Don't over think it. This bugged me too, but then I realised that Duchy used here isn't a noble rank or such, it's just the name of the Kingdom. Think more "Ducky Kingdom" and less "Lord Count Duke Barron King, Emperor of All that He Surveils" or whatever. Japanese light novel/mango writers (and some translators) tend to be a bit rubbish at european style nobility.

it timeskips fairly often but there's a particularly big one when they're prepping to fight the demon lord. the author just doesn't signal them, probably because they happen so often.
