Actually, he did nothing good, he just took advantage of the Libertas Cup rules that allow freedom in the play, which helped him gain points from incomplete or illegal sets that should've counted as a 'chonbo' ('foul' in Japanese). This chapter focuses on comedy and adds new characters (Tengan and her bodyguard) more than character development. And the god name is Hina (forget about the name "Odin" anyway)

didn't the god assure him that he could join the tournament because she would use her power for him? aka tell him the future moves needed to win, since her power was omniscience.

Didn't she already do so (in flashbacks before his moves)? And the aim of the match is to impress Tengan Kako, so making him have a handicap at the start is one things on the plan. Moreover, he don't know anything about the game, so telling him which sets to get ready for (which is much more complicate to remember) is not as effective as giving hints where he can use the imagination of complete newbie to create chaos. And don't forget mahjong is very complicate, the structure is 4 rounds 16 games for a normal play, nearly impossible to remember all the moves, especially for complete newbies like him.

You think she told him "keep these things in mind, and then just yolo", and it somehow butterflied into him winning, which she omniscied? I suppose that could have happened...

I had just assumed that the only way to cheat like this required her telling him the order to throw and use tiles. It is not a complicated game. yes it is complicated when you need the entire search-space. But in reality it is just "draw stuff. add to hand (in chronological order). discard stuff. play stuff. wait for next turn" or something similar. So all he has to remember is what round to discard/play the i'th tile, for all n tiles (so a sequential list of n operations to remember. No conditional branching nor cyclical structures).
A lot to remember? sure. But that is why I was impressed by his memory (also figured his superb memory was why she picked him as her companion for the final 30 days. Since that enabled her to do stunts like this).
