When you have a drill, everything starts to look like a nail you can hammer in with it~
Of course a craftsman introduced to a motor, is going to try and apply it to solve anything he can think of.

That said, this serge guy has some really weird ideas. Using a rotating motion to somehow power/play music? Usually you would just use wind magic directly to (capture and) play music and other sounds. Or maybe telepathy, if you are more well-versed in mental magics than wind magics.
You could even use earth-magic to power a diafragm, that in turn powers the air, if you are good at elemental magic but not wind. Or for fire mages, create some plasma (lightning) that in turn powers the air (tesla coil music).

His idea of powering a car with spinning magic is odd too. Normally you would use elemental magic directly, to apply the (reactive?) force that moves the car. But I suppose it might be quieter than the solutions wind and/or fire magic would need to impart forces. And the ability to stack x*y*z gears in a 3d box, for compounded torque, is an advantage over even the silent water-magic solutions (though earth magics ability to apply force on ENTIRE volume of car will always compound to more force... and more silent than both spinny-magic and water-magic solutions).

"It's embarrassing to say, but I'm actually quite famous."
So don't say it. Actually saying it just means you're more vain than you're worried about being embarrassed. Unless it has a real purpose, which it doesn't here.

Modern looking cars. Whee. Seem to have features that imply a magic engine also needs cooling.

They must really not be efficient if a horse is better. Takes too much magic power for sustained driving?

So rare to have kids being allowed to drink in isekai. Always some modern moralities mixed in there.

"It has no practical application."
He says about a music box. Is he saying music is worthless?

But what I'm really wondering about is why there aren't more inventions using similar ideas. It seems like inventions that include magic are completely foreign. I'm getting "people haven't invented soap yet" vibes, despite it being magic.

Usually you would...
Normally you would...
What world do you live in if using magic is normal?

I were just applying his (serge's) arguments against spinning fans to propel air, to the stuff he considered spinny-magic makes sense (cars propulsion). :salute:

The rest is just regular logic such as how intricate engines are bound to have huge efficiency-losses from internal friction and the like (not to mention more possible points of failure). As well as how (unless there are recoil/reactive forces in shooting fire/wind/water at ppl, bouncing the mage back 10 meters each time) some magics can only apply its force on a flat surface (like a sail, or side of a water-tight box), while others can apply it on entire solid volume, or be stacked inside the volume to mechanically add up.

Or how applying the force through impacts/continuous pressure by a fluid if bound to be a bit noisy (even with continuous pressure, water will slosh around as acceleration changes (if the jerk is non-zero), or wind in sails will pass by riders ears or at least interact with rest of atmosphere). And if the magics do have reactive forces, then shooting wind or fire backwards is bound to cause a LOT of noise (even water would do quite a bit).

Or for music, it simply makes sense to go from "I can poing strips of metal with a bumpy cylinder!" to "maybe just magically store the vibrations of the air? At greater fidelity than the analogue equivalent of a midi-chip? The thing will also have lower weight with less metal, and be able to record new stuff on the fly?".

Magic horseless wagon ok sure, magic horseless carriage alright I get it maybe fantasy up the designs a bit more. A 1940 willys jeep on a modern mechanic lift? Fuck right off.

I was expecting Ryoma to have at least some idea of how cars are made nowadays, that could give quite the boost they need to make cars better than horse carriages.

I wonder if he'll start an industrial revolution by accident at this point. Those self powered cogs could be used to create generators fairly easily I bet, letting you convert magic into "mundane" electricity. If the magic to rotation ratio is good enough it might even allow a post-energy scarcity scenario.
From what they told us about cars, the magic to rotation ratio is likely to be terrible as the cars were losing to horses in BOTH performance ( speed ) and efficiency ( likely sustainability or cost ) .

The idea of a fan is a interesting example tho, because it asks the question if making wind by spinning is more or less effective then just using wind magic to create it.
if creating a phenomenon out of thin air is "more efficient" then doing it manually then that would probably hamper scientific progress in magic usage ALOT.

And in the end. How the F car is losing to horse. I know that early age cars are slow. But this is the world of magic so improving will be much simpler. You don't even need a combustion engine. You just bypassing it into same idea of electric vehicle that just spinning the wheel. That means it's less part to maintain. less part to improve too. And they have better battery call magic stone.
The early cars ran like 5 mph, while a horse can run 30.
But from what was said it is also seem to be a matter of resource efficiency.
If buying a horse or two and feeding them is cheaper and also runs faster.
Then there is no need to use a car as it is also worse in difficult terrain.

But give it a 100-200 years and that might change...

Thank u always for ur great work...
^^...

Spin magic vs horse, for long distance maybe it's horse, except if they can make a cheap power source for the spin magic like how gasoline powering the combustion engine...

Someone remind me How old is he?
Wasnt it Considered Underaged Drinking? Or did this world drinking age is like Germany? Which we know you can Drink as underaged so long as somebody responsible or Elder
There was no minimum drinking age on Earth until the mid-19th century, so given that the world Ryoma's in is a mostly pre-industrial society, I wouldn't expect that they would have any restrictions.

Alcohol was actually used extensively throughout human history to protect against bacteria and other micro-organisms found in contaminated water, and the so-called "small beer" was one of the main fluids drank throughout the Middle Ages (including by children).

I think the trick with music box is, music box keeps information on a physical cylinder with bumps. And notes as tiny metal tongues.
But if you want to enchant wind magic to play music, you will need to enchant every note separately. Or summon a spirit of a musician. This setting doesn't seem to have a magical way to record information.

Powering a car with spinning magic makes sense, if you want the car to be able to make turns, or vary speed. And it makes even more sense, if the original developer is from Earth and can apply all sorts of Earth knowledge to the design.
It also makes sense, if, like in Magi Craft Meister, magic tends to negate its own recoil, making reactive movement difficult.

And in the end. How the F car is losing to horse. I know that early age cars are slow. But this is the world of magic so improving will be much simpler. You don't even need a combustion engine. Basically, magic cars are powered by the driver, while horse carriages are powered by a horse.
And if it's a mighty magic-user powering the car, horse carriages can counter with mighty tamed monsters.

So, it pokes fun at the fan, but then you have cars with indicators, rear view mirrors and radiators? Why? And how did they get rubber tires?
Apart from it being the artist's mistake? Well, we can only conclude that this is "cargo cult", where they try to replicate cars used by an otherworlder.

I'm thinking the cogs (gears) will make the magic cars viable. They probably haven't thought to apply them there. They might just have direct magic power to rotation generator or something, and the drivers control the speed by changing the amount of mana they supply. But if there's gears...... it might be possible to convert lesser mana output to speed. Or if there are magic stones in this world (I don't remember if there are or not), they could use those, as it will no longer be necessary to have dynamic mana flow.
