The elders care only about their authority, but not about their dignity.

A prisoner escaping puts in doubt their authority, since it defies their orders, so they care.
Other elves getting killed and enslaved has nothing to do with their authority, since they didn't give any order about it since the start, so they just ignore it.
And then they talk about the "infamy" they are going to suffer, not the infamy of their shitty behavior, just the infamy of their orders getting defied.
