It would be strange if it wasn't.
I was suspecting it in chapter 10

The weird shape of the spirit heart gave the impression it was a fake to trigger a trap.
I would have expected that in some thousands years the elves must have had to deal with thieves a lot of times, and so they must have setup an infinite number of traps, but guess that place in the lunar palace never got any thieves inside before, odd. Their too good security was their undoing, because that left them completely unprepared and vulnerable.

The real question is if that dud is also cursed in some way.
And the same elder who was smirking also gave an other magic-chip to his son who is chasing Rhodri, so maybe the fake spirit chip may activate its curse once the second chip comes close

It would be funny if the big chip that Rhodri stole had a curse to turn humans into elves, that would mess up all his plans, and force him to play straight all his elf facade
