Was reading a manga about horror stories set during the height of COVID, so the connection's still fresh in my mind.
The change in sense of smell and taste reminds me of some real life horror stories about long covid. Some people, after recovering, had a hard time eating because everything tasted more intense and pungent. The way the parents act also remind me of the denial ("it's not like it spreads through the air") and conspiracy theories (claims of deliberate bio/chem weapons, claims of government aid like food and vaccines and instructions to stay at home as a way to control and silence people) that spread during the pandemic.
Although, I can't tell if the pot in the last panel is regular food or infected seafood stew.
