not just manga tbh i find that mixers/clubs/"anything that isnt a bar with alcohol involved" across most mediums usually ends pretty badly if the reason to go to said venue is "non-celebratory", almost like your cursed to suffer a horrible fate if you are using alcohol just to fit in and not for its idealised societal function (ie. celebration of some kind with family/friends)

also this tends to afflict women more than men, i wonder if tvtropes has anything on this lol
