To kids who are still in high school, everything that happens in high school is a big deal. That's basically their whole life.

Especially in Japan, since (from what I understand) their culture weighs failure more heavily than most others, in all aspects of life.

nah, look. i did projects with classmates in middle school for 4 fukin years. some were a pain, some were fun. They were academic, we had to do research on our own, we had to collaborate, divide work... it proved Useful in learning about teamwork in general. BUT. we never had mandatory participation for P.E. events. We got graded for our effort. oh. and no, i ain't japanese.

now, i ain't saying she didn't jump the gun. she could've relied on her friend, the popular one. though cheering or volleyball... limited options~~

Sadly for me we all got graded as one as it's an assignment and presentations, maybe there was some individual effort grades but I doubt it much. It's tough as the top grading student's be in the same group

in my...our case it was done on purpose. best with worst, hoping it would rub off some of that effort from the top student, onto the "slackers". but then again, the teacher knew all of us from 2nd grade AND selected each of us for her "special class" soooo... she knew how to push each student buttons.
