"Blueprint" is an interesting word. We use it generically to refer to plans, particularly architectural plans. But the word comes from the use of a copying process called the cyanotype process. Paper is coated with light-sensitive chemicals that turn blue when exposed to light. The original drawing is placed on top of the treated paper and exposed to light. The lines drawn on the original block light from the sensitized paper below, and so the treated paper turns blue except for the parts covered by the dark lines of the original drawing. After being exposed for a while, the treated paper is rinsed with water to stop the process.

The result is blue paper with white lines. More recently, the chemical process is different and produces white paper with blue lines.

In a culture that does not have this kind of photocopying technique, the word "blueprint" would have no meaning.
