I think in most states in the US, it's illegal to buy or drink in places like bars if your underaged but you can drink pretty young if your with your guardian. I don't know the exact age but I started at 14.

There are certain conditions to drinking underage while in a residence with your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) however this can vary state to state, and even within cities/counties.

@Meridis - It's the opposite, most are hardline 21 with a few exceptions (as like religious reasons, no charges to people brought to hospitals in Cali) and only ~9 states that gives explicit permission for parents. Though, in practice, nobody has tried to go after parents allowing their kid to try in private.

This chapter have a nostalgic ping to me. I once had a group met from a hobby that one of the members in the group was still 20. So one of the key reasons I quietly choose the establishment that I did for a celebration was because I know over half the staff and don't tend to card in the first place. By that point, I was already the old guy in the group but still young enough to feel like a peer. I'm pretty sure that will be the last time I get to be in that role.
