Kids with a high level of innate intelligence don't really have to study much in earlier grades because they can just kind of intuit the concepts being taught right away, but that natural intuition can only go so far, and once they hit a grade where the material is beyond their ability to automatically grok, they crash hard because they never learned the techniques for actual studying like their "dumber" peers had to at a much younger age.
