I always assume everything is amplified in manga. Just look at a normal family anywhere and compare it with family drama stories of the same culture. Doesn't matter where in the world, fiction likes to exaggerate.

At least, generally speaking, Japan does have the huge idol business, as a part of the live action entertainment sector. Folks pump a lot of money and devotion into it. It even extends to the virtual idol side and, furthermore, mobile games were fans can spend endless money on game characters. So, maybe in Japan it doesn't need to be exaggerated as much as in some other parts of the world.

Within Japan, outstanding shogi players get more attention now-a-days than do Grandmasters in the West.

(Grandmasters used to get more attention than they now do.)
