Really? I've often heard that Japan doesn't really hold sushi in that high of a regard (not that they think it's bad, but it's just like ordinary food, like a burger or something). So it kinda confuses me why it would be both expensive, but seemingly based on this chapter, culturally tied to celebrations? Maybe weddings/proposals?sushi's pretty expensive in Japan.
When I was in Japan a few years back (sometime before the pandemic started at least) you could easily find a platter of like 5 or so nigiri for the equivalent $3 or $4 USD in Okinawa. Where I live in the states it is like $8 per 2 of the same thing (and far from as fresh). It'd still be a decent bill but not nearly as insane as what we would pay for it here in the states.Dude, sushi's pretty expensive in Japan. 20 servings isn't a funny number in this regard.
depends on where your ordering from and what type really so they range from 120 something yen per serving to 500+ yen per serving, I doubt she's getting anything too expensive so roughly 300 yen per serving maybe? so 300x20 so 6000 yen? When I was in Japan a few years back (sometime before the pandemic started at least) you could easily find a platter of like 5 or so nigiri for the equivalent $3 or $4 USD in Okinawa.
