Dude, sushi's pretty expensive in Japan. 20 servings isn't a funny number in this regard.

Really? I've often heard that Japan doesn't really hold sushi in that high of a regard (not that they think it's bad, but it's just like ordinary food, like a burger or something). So it kinda confuses me why it would be both expensive, but seemingly based on this chapter, culturally tied to celebrations? Maybe weddings/proposals?

When I was in Japan a few years back (sometime before the pandemic started at least) you could easily find a platter of like 5 or so nigiri for the equivalent $3 or $4 USD in Okinawa. Where I live in the states it is like $8 per 2 of the same thing (and far from as fresh). It'd still be a decent bill but not nearly as insane as what we would pay for it here in the states.

depends on where your ordering from and what type really so they range from 120 something yen per serving to 500+ yen per serving, I doubt she's getting anything too expensive so roughly 300 yen per serving maybe? so 300x20 so 6000 yen?

Also personally speaking I can eat like 14 servings no problem so... ^^; Might explain why I usually just eat in sushi buffets
