Can someone educated in Japanese travel tell me if it is just a time saver to fly to Aso, or if it is legitimately impractical to take the Shinkansen to Kumamoto then local trains to Aso? Because if it was practical, I would think it odd that he would fly when he could take a train which (I would assume, again on no basis, correct me if I'm wrong) is cheaper.

Taking the Shinkansen is basically a days travel from Tokyo to Kumamoto, while apparently Kumamoto's Airport is located in Aso where his family lives.
Much more convenient, though more expensive of course.

Airfare rates are cheaper than Shinkansen when you go this distance. It's like paying maybe 120 per seat on average instead of the 200-300 for Shinkansen. Plus you gotta transfer at the busy Hakata station to get to Kumamoto station (lovely place). It's probably more expensive to fly at this time of year since I assume he is going home of Obon or something which is a pretty busy time of the year.
