How realistic author san portray this how when a person is in deep depression somehow their mind just goes what a person wanted to do, iirc read, there was a person was in deep ptsd that his mind forgets everything after he sleeps and just remembers before the trauma.

To be honest I think his wife is mostly at fault here...
Sure, the guy only "thought of himself" but that's just what happy ppl do.
Happiness blinds ppl into thinking "everything is going great right now!".
You wouldn't blame a blind guy for being hit by a bicycle, right?
If his wife was dissatisfied about something she should've expressed it with words towards him.
Staying silent and enduring it then just dropping a bomb on him AND her child is just selfishness incarnate...
Not only did she break his heart she also made sure her kid will have to deal with this terrible experience.
