I initially assumed the "soft soil" was poorly worded, that they where actually talking about gravel or something to continue the "sliding" part of magical enhancement emphasized by the rain story, but then realized it likely really was just soft soil, given the rain, and instead just listing the other environmental issues, that you can't push well if you just sink instead.
