I love this manga the most when it's not taking itself too seriously, like when they berated Shin for not having common sense.

Getting a bit existential here. He is still a threat, but so is Shin’s ‘common sense.’

So I'm going to come out and say it, I really hope the tension picks up again with the next chapter. I've got my thoughts about the manga, but in general it started out much stronger and now it feels much more average. And it's not even due to the ultimate magicians. The problem is weak enemies. In terms of personality and mystery. Their power is strong sure, but honestly I could not care less about the enemies. The subplot with Shtrom and his bride (forgot her name, she barely appears anymore) was so interesting and now it looks like we're finally getting something. Hopefully, since that subplot and Shtrom were what made the demons so interesting.

But instead we got for the most part no real advancement in the plot beyond the allying of the nations. We only see what the other demons are planning and that they're strong. But they want to take over the world? They hate everyone? And they claim they are demons because they're inhuman, but when around each other they act exactly as their human selves in the past?

Shtrom really shows what it's like to become a demon because he became one in personality before becoming an actual one. But now he's been sidelined for so long and I don't feel like the other demons really keep up with him in terms of quality except the right hand captain.

Again, hopefully with the story of the demon that was defeated by Merlin and Melida we can glimpse into some of the mystery of the world again. I have more thoughts about the series and will keep reading. But it's getting to that breaking point where I might stop for a while and pick it up later after some chapters have gone by.

@Grimjack Many Isekai-type stories become like that, they start more or less strong due to an interesting or well executed idea, but the need to stretch the story so the author/editorial can sell more books/mangas always cause it to fall in the usual tropes and make it feel generic.

This story has fallen already in the "enemy of the week" category, for example. There are many enemies, strong and weak, but with little to no real impact whatsoever.

I can't help but feel like the Ultimate Magicians are whipping themselves too much because of two demons slipping away. It would be beyond arrogant to think they could 100% control everything going on when invading a demon country. Sure, they did some mistakes when attacking the fortress, but those mistakes aren't specifically related to demons deciding to counterattack their home country. There could have been, just as well, two demons hiding somewhere else, and when the allied troops started to bring down the fortress, those hiding demons would have taken the opportunity to do whatever they wanted, wherever they wanted.

@Armsdealer12 Yeah, she should start by changing that dress. I wonder if she's trying to compensate for her lack of magic prowess by attracting August's attention like that.

@Kaarme

Agreed. If the devils were smart, they'd have stashed one... maybe two people outside of a country, to completely destroy it while the UMs were busy at the fort. It only takes one devil to massacre armies and huge swaths of land in moments.

@JuliusCV yeah, exactly. Enemy of the week is the perfect term for it. The hunters were literally only written to fight and die in the fortress. Their stories added nothing to our understanding of the now destroyed empire since we already knew that they were worst of the worst.

Honestly, the ultimate magicians and gramps and grandma are what keeps the series afloat for me overall. I've left a lot of isekai by the wayside but this is the first time I felt an isekai was doing something refreshing without reinventing the formula.

If anyone wants to read a good example of not enemy of the week and building up mystery, suspense, and tension, Aridane in the Blue Sky is pretty great. It's shounen and death isn't that commonplace, but it does build up a pretty good world with lots of grey areas.
