They don't. Rather, they see the potential for said abuser to mend her ways and realize how she had treated him wrong. Odds are, she'll eventually start to realize that how she treated her ex was truly wrong and she should have given him more respect, love, and affection. So it wouldn't be going back to an abuser, but someone that has reformed and will now treat him better.
For me, I'm not really caring who gets the end result. It's easy for him to fall for this new girl, cause that wouldn't be any surprise. I am more interested in seeing the abuser start to reform and become better as a person. She makes a more interesting story.
