They're still mostly kids, so they have a harder time with subtle stuff. Even modern-day kids ofttimes need to have things spelled out for them. One is sheltered, another is stubborn, and another feels she has something to prove so she can earn her spot. Pretty much recipes for tunnel vision.

I only question it cause its a fantasy type world with adventurer type squads as the norm, sure I can get they didn't want to work together but the absence of teamwork as a requirement?

I don't understand what you mean about the absence of teamwork as a requirement. The instructor seemed to be hoping they'd figure it out on their own, and work together. Lag did at least, but the others did not until he brought it up. Reason I believe is because of their personalities, and they were too focused on powering through as individuals to figure out it was meant to be a group test. Which is what I meant by tunnel vision.
