Just sticking a recommendation in here, since this story is similar in a couple of aspects. Bus for two
It's not as funny, and they are only middle-schoolers, but it's kinda sweet
I picked it up after the anime too, but I just can't look back at the adaptation with good eyes, when I watched it before the manga it was just a mildly funny series with some cute characters, but now I just see the mangled form of what's one of my all time favourite manga. They rearranged order of a few events and cut out others entirely, as well as cut characters off the plot. The Anime's last couple endings are anime original takes on Masuda's discarded plans
of the visit to the Shiragami house, but also the set up for such was Asahi's plan to confess at the school festival, which in the manga happened after he had gone to the Shiragami house and was prompted after the time-travelling with Mikan and seeing her confession.
The anime just feels like less and twisted version of the early parts of the manga.
For us here enjoying the shy train lovebirds and the peanut gallery in the manga, I think we would end up pretty disappointed or some people even upset if an anime adaptation came and it was all different like that. It's not about asking for a top tier adaptation, but a faithful one to the source material.

I was talking about JWWW in that spoiler though? I myself haven't read You and I are Polar Opposites or even watched the anime (it's on my list to check out though)
