I got baited on this series, I really did. I was expecting, you know, maybe some hard times, but they'd support each other through it and find a way forward.
Instead it ended up being, functionally, a lesson about "never chase your dreams, the corporate grind is the best you can ever hope for, and definitely don't get any big ideas about marrying your girlfriend." It's depressing as all hell and for no payoff.
Is it realistic? Sure, realistically it was a gamble from the start, sometimes these things just don't work out, etc etc. If it reflects the author's journey of throwing away the suit to become a fulltime mangaka like some folks have suggested here, I can't really fault her for it, clearly it was a miserable, heartbreaking experience! But as a story it sucks, it just sucks, the tone at the beginning didn't prepare me for any of this, and I'm worse off for having read it at all.
