I don't think it was an email asking them to trade blows with each other, as it was supposed to be emails proclaiming their love and to "hook them up."

Ah, if you look at the picture when she punches him, he's nailing her in the gut/chest. He could also be grabbing her shirt, but it looks to me like a full on fist with the art seemingly implying an upward movement of his arm.
