Why would they even go along with this? The cost / benefit ratio is atrocious.
Why would anyone opt to be in the astronomy club, go to meetings, perform assignments, enter competitions and all that bullshit for a topic they're not even all that interested in? That AND having to put up with the teacher hanging out and monitoring them.
They'd have a far easier time just finding a different location to hang out for insomnia needs and cutting out that mountain of other hassle.
And just how would they lose the room if they didn't do all that nonsense? Is it just going to vanish into the aether or something? Erase the entire room from the building? More likely they would just be told not to go there and it would be locked again, in which case all they'd need to do is wait for the school to stop watching, then just break in again.
Fuck the astronomy club. The school should have just been glad enough that someone was willing to keep the room maintained.

But to answer your question, it's probably because the mc has a lot of free time and the fmc meanwhile probably just enjoy goofing around. Also it's just watching the stars. And not to mention, the room is in school grounds and it'll allow them to sleep at school. Plus the rules in Japan are a bit different regarding school students.
