Damn. I didn't have one with no guard even in the army.

It's what allows me to do it myself, and be able to be reasonably sure that it's even all around (not saying that it is even, just that doing it that short gives the most amount of confidence). And my hair doesn't grow long so much as it grows thick, and when it gets around and behind my ears it starts driving me nuts -- so everything goes.

What gets me is around and behind my ears, and at the base of the neck. I can do some maintenance using a precision trimmer, but eventually it's all got to go -- largely because it doesn't grow long so much as it grows thick and then starts just driving me nuts.

For me the most troublesome length was when it was semi long. Not long enough for a proper ponytail, but long enough to need one without getting in the way. Which is somewhat longer than what he had.
