I don't know who said it, but children's books and films have monsters not because they want to scare them (though that's sometimes the case - see the Cauldron-Born in The Black Cauldron) but to let them know they can be defeated.
Before the monster is taken out, Jaws is more about rampant paranoia and human stupidity with a side of hubris. Valuable lessons, but I value children's innocence more as a counter to my cynicism, even if they wouldn't.
