I guess the translater didn't want to write a translation note so I'll give a half assed explanation. That's a specific kind of yokai called a Nue. You may have seen it before in shin megami tensei/persona or seen Houjuu Nue, the Touhou character based on it. The nue has a the head of a monkey, body of a tanuki, limbs of a tiger, and a snake for a tail. Despite this mostly mammalian appearance, it's actually considered a bird for some reason. There's a famous old legend about a Nue giving the emperor nightmares and some samurai slaying the beast.
