I don't get the "you don't understand people's heart" part supposed to mean, especially since Kanki's men are shown to be oddly loyal too despite being bandits. Maybe what it supposed to mean would become clearer later on, but as of now it's just a the "cool line" before things start turning in their favour, and even then it's more about condemning Kanki than saying why they choose Riboku.

It is supposed to show irony. I love it so much, it is so fucking funny. Kanki's schemes has always been reading his enemies mind and heart. If you recall the Saki clan's purpose is to torture soldiers to get them to say what the general's past is.

I don't get why people are complaining, the fact that it is taking this long to kill Riboku is a testament to his true strength, he is a final boss, it shouldn't be easy nor quick to defeat. He sure is a great strategist and all that, but he is not perfect; strategically speaking Kanki won, Riboku doesn't have a plan, he is literally just there waiting, he is no longer giving orders, his own morale is already broken; while Kanki is still cooking something, the guy hasn't stopped smiling.

Being a genius strategist is not Riboku's true strength. What he has always had and what had let him achieve all his important victories in this manga has been the people around him.

He outsmarted Ouki, but that wasn't enough, Ouki still had the strength and cunning to do something. Riboku only truly won until Houken killed Ouki. And here the only reason Riboku is still alive is because he has such an amazing rooster of friends and followers, all of them with talent, power and charisma. Riboku has everything that shounen protagonists have.

Right now we, and everyone in the Kanki army, are in the unfortunate place in which every villain from classic hero stories ends at the end of their plot. We are all thinking "why don't you freaking die already? What do we have to do to finally kill you?". And I'm enjoying this so much because of this. This stress is fun. Just imagine the catharsis once we get to see the result of the battle. I feel like I'm in a D&D battle against the BBG and the party is using every single resource we have to overcome the ridiculous legendary actions and resistances of the BBG.

every time they hype up riboku my eyes just rolls out of my skull. Its like WoW's Shadowlands all over again. Dunno why the author is sticking to this dead weight of an antagonist. Its taking away so much screen time from the chars we care about

that only works if Riboku was a fun antagonist to begin with. Which he is not.

Well, that is very subjective. I agree that he is not the best antagonist ever, but I still have fun with him as the antagonist for the same reasons I already explained.

I am ready to accept Riboku living and all Kanki squad dying (even though I still want to see Maron being Tou's strategist), but if NOT A SINGLE PERSON of Riboku's entourage dies Imma be a little miffed.

All Riboku has ever had going for him is plot armor and other characters going "gosh, he's just so cool and smart!" There's nothing there besides a bunch of totally unearned speeches about how he's so bummed about war and occasionally getting comeuppance that is usually undercut.

Maaaan, I know the author trying to pitch Riboku vs Shin as the final climax of Zhou conquest but goddamn this is painful to watch

The problem is that it is boring. We know how it ends and that is fine but not if you keep milking it chapter after chapter. This fight has been going on for chapters and no one important died, for now, like even not any side character. We are being told how great Riboku is but have never seen anything about why he would be that great. He only is winning with luck.

But see you are saying he is the BBG but he is not. Like we are following Shin and he has a shit load of stuff still to do. This is starting to become like when you are fighting the BBG but the DM decided that he can't be killed so you are fucked no matter what you do because he will survive to fight another day.

You say "we have never seen anything about why he would be great?" But he is already responsible of besting Ouki strategically and tactically by leading him into an ambush with the one man that could kill him, then in the coalition war Riboku almost won by sneaking past everyone, only the surprise appearance of Yotanwa prevented him from doing so, then he almost defeated Ousen but our MC and a couple other wild cards prevented it, and in this last part of this war up to the moment when he got tricked into this ambush by Kanki, Riboku had succeeded in destroying almost the totality of Kanki's army and locking Ousen in the south. Again, he is a strategist, one that has mastered Sun Tzu's Art of war, but his true strength is in the talented people he has managed to put under his command, and his only weakness has constantly been the wild and reckless instinctual leaders like Shin. He is the current BBG by the mere fact that he is responsible for most of the suffering and character's growth of our protagonist (Ouki and Duke Hyou died in battles plotted and controlled by Riboku), he has been the mastermind of several critical battles and wars.

"Nothing" has happened in the sense that these two sides have been locked in this battle for "many" (not that many) chapters. But a bunch of things have happened already. We have seen all the subordinates from both sides try their own chance at killing/protecting Riboku; if you have been paying attention you'll see how all of them are accumulating injuries and their soldiers have mixed to the point that this has become an almost disorganized melee, a desperate struggle. Riboku's subordinates barely winning at the moment since they have achieved their objective: to hold up until reinforcements arrive. I would understand if you say that this is frustrating or stressful, because that is what this situation is supposed to be. But boring? You and me have very different ideas of what boring is.

Besides, after all that I have said, don't get me wrong, I want Riboku dead as much as anyone else. If the manga tries to be more historically accurate he will die soon after this defeat (he will lose one way or another), or it could take its liberty (which has happened already) and have him die as direct consequence of this battle.

"Nothing" happening is more about the overall narrative. Nothing has been revealed about the characters we didn't already know (maybe Kanki's backstory, though that felt pretty contrived), nothing has really developed on the macro scale that wasn't nullified soon after, and the overall narrative has moved forward at a snail's pace for over a hundred chapters now. I know I'm not going to convince you of anything, and you can like what you like, but this whole arc exemplifies some truly bad workmanship.
