I get what you're saying, but acknowledging that a strategy is theoretically possible and recognizing it as checkmate are two completely different things. I imagine that they recognized it because after Qin claimed Sanyou, those two probably put themselves in Shouheikun's point of view and assessed what moves they would make in his position, only to realize that there was nothing outside of an early coalition invasion that could stop Qin from conquering China.
