It was explained earlier that geisha wear wigs, while maiko get their hair styled and it stays on until the specific day when they can let their hair down. It is a bit strange to see a sick maiko keep the hairstyle when she can't work, but I guess that's just how their schedule is.

From what information I could find on wikipedia, it seems that pre-WW2 geisha had their own hair styled, while post-WW2 they started using wigs, since they couldn't anymore 100% rely on hairstylists to maintain their hair every week. I don't know any historians that can confirm or refute this, so we'll just have to leave it at that.
@SuperOniichan@fatto_catto Just adding on to this thread of info. I read somewhere that because the hairstyle pulled at their hair so much they would end up with a bald spot. I can't remember where I read that though so take it with a grain of salt.
