Hmm, what a strange mother. I cook my kids favourite food to see their smiling faces. Why rob yourself of something so easy and wonderful?

@Schnitzelchen It's the combination of reservation, wanting the best for your children, and pure stubbornness you'll often find in Asian parents. I sure hope I'll be different from my parents when I have children of my own.

Maybe she should talk to Kiyo's Granny, since Kiyo also wanted to become a Maiko. Granny's laid back attitude and years of wisdom could help her understand Sumire more.

Man. Seen so many manga screw this up real bad with the mom by going too hard, but nice work here.

Harsh but understandable.
Sumire may be killing it but it's a harsh path so the fears of Sumire's mom are not unfounded. I mean, look at how hard Kiyo failed. It's only through luck and coincidence she ended up filling the cook's spot.

It seems to me, or is Suu's mother practically Suu 20-25 years older in the future? Their faces are incredibly similar. For obvious reasons, of course, but still.

When you are that detached, I guess it makes sense that Sumire probably had to work hard even before she left. Which explains her talent and success.

@Midoriha - That's pretty much my line of thinking. Who knows what the mom went through to have that mindset?

I get this feeling that Suu-chan's mother also had a dream that she wanted to hold on to and achieve as a teenager but was forced to give up it up for reasons....

Honestly so happy we finally addressed Suu-chan’s family, even if only briefly.

Though seeing her mum properly, suu-chan’s dedication makes sense... but it’s heartbreaking. She’s probably been put in so many extra activities her whole life by her mother whose been pushing her into what the typical child of Asian parents (speaking from experience), an overachiever shaped into what your parents want. Then she goes against her mothers wishes, and her mother more or less shuts her out completely. Punishing her for going against her wishes.

Thank god she has Kiyo.

tbh i don't think id be super wild about my teenage kid dropping out of school to become a courtesan and live a weird monastic lifestyle dedicated to entertaining drunk old guys

I kind of get why she's against it. Her daughter is about to become a glorified prostitute.

While it is a beautiful profession, I too would not be thrilled to have my 15 y/o drop out and in order to pursue it

So it's like that, huh... it feels. Like a reasonable dispute. No matter how you look at it, it's kind of like- and I know this ain't a fully accurate comparison- if your kid dropped out of school to become a ballet dancer. But she didn't stop her, either.

It feels like the right kind of bittersweet.

Geishas are not prostitutes, they are artists and entertainers. They do not have sex with people for money and they never did. You're thinking of oiran, which were high-ranking sex workers during the edo period.

geisha aren't sex workers but they do work in an extremely restrictive and secretive environment for the entertainment of almost entirely men behind closed doors. its totally understandable that a mom wouldn't want her teenage daughter living in a convent halfway across the country, quitting school for the purposes of *maybe* getting a job that necessitates strict devotion and adherence to some super archaic shit.
