As you may already now, it's very rare for manga characters to mature into full adults: most of them istead undergoes a metamorphosis from the juvenile form into the shriveled grandparent form. This transformation is usually called "time skip" or "backstory" and last only a couple of page. Kiyo is probably preparing for that metamorphosis.
