OH COME ON!!! YOU'RE GOING TO GIVE US ALL OF THIS AND TELL ME THERE ISN'T ANY ROMANCE!!! THERE'S SO MUCH POTENTIAL HERE FOR IT TO BE ABSOLUTELY HEART SHATTERING!!! JUST GIVE US ONE AUTHOR PLEASE I'M BEGGING YOU orz orz orz

(okay but there is actually so much potential for a cute romance between two girls who either are or training to become maiko, like this setting is just begging for it, because I doubt it's rare for girls to find themselves getting romantic feelings for their housemates)

Ahem
I hope the reason why Momoko didn't visit isn't because there was bad blood between them, seeing as Chikako took over the roll as "Mother" instead of her, and there's the chance the original "Mother" may have passed. I have a feeling this isn't the case though, and it's probably gonna be something silly like "she forgot" or they schedule their own time to hang out together, just the two of them.

I hope this arc rounds up with present time Mother and Momoko meeting. And Kiyo makes them a meal ☺️

Speaking of yuri romance, for the longest time I thought that Sumire's crush was kiyo. Imagine my surprise when it wasn't, the manga has a way of paneling leaning towards that, but alas.

It's so weird, because Momoko has definitely been inside the manor in a past chapter. Why retcon that as if she never goes in?

This is normal because, on the one hand, the Japanese tend to show female friendship as homoerotic, and on the other hand, they like to tease more than show any actual lesbian romance, if this is not the end in itself of the work (Naoko Yamada and Ichiro Okouchi are the biggest “recedevists” of this). This is why you so often see people being surprised by the "sudden" romance or reminder that the characters are just friends, since many people are either used to it and consider it typical fanservice/yuri bait, or pre-read any animanga "super friendship" as gay.

So, from the point of view of a Western reader, this will in any case look ambiguous and subtle, regardless of the real nature of the relationship. Marnie was there was probably the most loud case where this approach created a lot of noise due to the context of the story itself.
