Don't get too passionately involved in a ship if there is (or you think there is) a good chance that it will sink. If it really sunk, then you will experience much less negative emotions. If it comes to the port, then a positive surprise will only increase your joy. I'm an impulsive person, so this doesn't always work for me, but it has also saved me from a number of disappointments.
