I think it's just cause it's the most recognizable reference for japanese readers, like the magical girl genre's equivalent of "Pokemon".

Is it common in gay manga? I've seen it a lot in normal manga myself. But I guess it's because it's the most popular magical girl franchise in Japan, it makes the big bucks.

I think because I've seen it more than a handful of times in BL where the main otaku character often says his childhood fave or current is pretty cure. A main and primary GL one being this manga which is all about it.

I totally forgot about him!! It was during the height of Yuri!! on ice. That might make sense why choosing it
