@GreyArea Thanks for the translations and for your good sense and good taste. pg. 17, "can you explain to me what's all this about" is not standard English. We don't say "can you explain what is this?", we say "can you explain what this is?"

@lightingcloud No, the """actual""" appearance of the female protagonist has short hair. Also presumably they're in different classes since he's always explaining his day to her, though I could be misremembering there. This is a different girl.

@araquetty81 @GreyArea "Can you explain to me what's all this about?" is as perfectly acceptable as "Can you explain to me what this is all about?" and there really was no reason to change it. You could have also used, "Can you explain to me what is this all about?" or even better, "Can you explain to me what's this all about?"

We don't say "can you explain what is this?", we say "can you explain what this is?"

You wouldn't say, for instance, "Can you explain what this is creature?", you'd say, "Can you explain what is this creature?"

@FredFriendly The <creature> noun goes between "this" and "is". So it would be "Can you explain what (a/this) <creature> is?". Your example, "Can you explain what is this creature?", only works if you add a semicolon after "explain", so it would be "Can you explain; what is this creature?"

I didn't find it last time either, but I did find this which was reasonably close in age (it's about hundred years old, which IIRC is what the reference in last chapter claimed it should be) and how it was presented (like random voices picked up from the cityscape). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris:_A_Poem
(Only difference is, no actual recorders involved - just people or imagination. On the other had, recording technology was probably not good enough to have it mechanical in those days, would have been cheaper and easier with one or a number of listeners.)
