Because we don't use honorifics in English a lot of the dialogue loses it's impact when translated. The suffix 'kun' should only be used with your peer group or to anyone younger than you. A superior or anyone older should always be addressed as 'san', to not do so is incredibly rude or informal which is pretty much the same thing in Japan.
