Don't think he knew she was in love with him. No one noticed. The idiot even asked if there was anyone she was interested in because the rafferties were worried she wanted to marry someone but was too conscious of trying not to be a nuisance to them to pursue the relationship (that's true though) . And he jokingly says that if the person is not suitable, he'll chase him away like an overbearing father.
