After reading up to this point I decided to actually read the source material.
I got halfway through the original Freak Island, and even as a major fan of horror and gore, this work is simply much more enjoyable to read!
This makes me wish the original was a more brutal competitive romance drama. Maybe it's recency bias but I think it would have been more enjoyable seeing cute super-human serial killers lusting after one guy in the original work.
