Yeah. I guess it got canned as that seems to be ending it in the middle. Wonder if Batan will end up with one of the guys.

Considering it's 73 chapters I wouldn't say "canned".
Botan's romance was never meant to be focused on but just a side while the relationship between the main characters after officializing them as a couple, a kind of development the majority of comics similar to this one fail to accomplish, was further examined.
A lot people like to use "axed" whenever their expectations are not met in regard to side characters — here we have naturally reached a conclusion as the two confirm their feelings as they enter high-school; anything else happening until they graduated and passed their exam was basically a filler.

Even if it wasn't necessarily axed, the ending felt rushed. No character besides the main two really has a conclusion, which makes the rest of the cast feel lifeless-- so if it's not a result of axing, then it's just poor writing. Hakoiri Drops is a good example of a four-koma that avoids this status-quo issue.
