From what little I know of Ciaphas Cain (wants to avoid trouble, stumbles onto great solutions to said trouble and looks great while doing it), another MC from another novel by this author would suit that better. That fellow is literally specially conscripted (old unused law) to frontline service after 1 week of officer training (he was literally a handyman before that) because he saw a noble lady naked, but he's sort of transmigrated from Earth so he has some movie knowledge and can literally luck his way to victory.
This MC ? He was okay with dying heroically, but he can't do it to his subordinates as well and he's more of a guardhouse lawyer, sticking to the exact wording of his task and only coming up with out of the box solutions when the normal ones won't complete the task.
