This is the best manga I've ever read. It's the only fictional work that moved me to the point of tears. I would even go so far as to say it changed my life, in a way. Do read it immediately.
i agree i cried so hard during the last few chapter where the mountains forsake mori but k2 calls and pulls him, it felt like destiny had intertwined his fate with k2 since the day he saw Takatori

This is a stimulating manga about loneliness, and the behaviours that come with it. There are lot of elements of other themes here too, but it’s mainly just a manga about a lonely, antisocial man trying to find his own peace by seeking solitude away from human society and it’s often toxic relationships. Hence he finds his calling in mountain climbing.

Overall 7/10. The story is pretty good, the art is amazing, and the concept is very interesting.

But, ultimately, the direction of events was unrealistically and unnecessarily tragic. There was no reason for everything to go downhill off of one single news article that was just a distorted version of “girl falls down slope, noob club member climbs to save her.” Kurosawa was repentant days after the event, and with Onishi’s death, he probably would’ve felt guilty enough to apologize to Yumi too and intervene with the principal rescinding his recommendation letter.

There was no need to force everyone else to fall down such a slippery slope just to set up Buntaro’s character arc. There was no need to demonize Yumi by making her go down the worst possible path; becoming a succubus who destroyed people’s lives with their sense of self-worth. There was no need for Miyamoto to become a local vagrant, as none of the events prior would’ve stopped him from going to France to climb; he was literally fine with barely getting by so long as he could climb there.

It’s a good manga, but only 7/10 because the author tried to convey the lesson by forcing a bad fate on the characters for the sake of a bigger impact. Life is up and down, not just down constantly. It’s literally how things work.
