If I were to guess it's them coming to terms to being in love and the classical learning the real motivations. But honestly the fast track of killing his mentor has made the pacing confusing.

To a certain degree I agree, but I think that's kind of the point. His old mentor was never meant to be a major point in the manga, Rokusute meant nothing to his mentor. It's why the main brunt of his backstory so far is focused on Rokusute mending the fact that his mentor cared nothing about him with the fact that it's nonetheless still the only fond memories that he does have. It's why he ends up having a mental breakdown in the shower with Kohaku, it's rapidly hitting him that now that his old mentor is dead, there's really no one that remotely cares about him except Kohaku, who he's been deceiving this entire time.
