That's the series' conceit: she was a straight-laced honor student who fell for him and turned herself into the kind of girl she thinks would suit him best.

It sadly isn't that easy in reality, even if a father was abusive to a child, they could find comfort in the abuse since that's what they are used to, or she could be looking for comfort in someone who is like a "father" to her, to try and fill in the space her actual father left her.
Although I don't think it will lead to that path, at least I hope...
