To my knowledge when it comes to sex outside of a committed romantic relationship it's like this:

One-night stand = ワンナイトの相手 (wan-naito no aite) which means One Night Partner.

Hook-up/Booty Call/Fuck Buddy = セフレ (Sefure) a shortening of a shortening of セックスフレンド (sex friend), but really means a relationship where sex is the ONLY factor, and there is no social connection outside of that sex.
ALSO, there is a more intentionally vague term used sometimes, when in polite situations and desiring plausable deniability, which is 遊び相手 (asobi aite) which means Playmate. The term's meaning basically depends on who is using it: if it's a literal child or maybe a grandma, they could be talking about someone that they actually just do hobbies and play with. If it's a young adult talking about another young adult that they might be sexually attracted to, it's likely they are using it as a stealthy replacement in a polite setting for saying sefure because they don't want to be that overt and crude about it.

Friend with Benefits = Nothing really exists in Japanese, which is why they came up with their own term (The "Free Friends" thing, I haven't checked the raws to see what they really say). There really isn't a shorthand label for it, because while those relationships do exit, having a casual sexual relationship with a geniune friend is really socially ambiguous and not "okay" enough in wider society to be discussed openly. Hence the whole complexity of trying to break down the situation for someone else by describing it, and how they don't expect most people to be understanding.

Basically, the riskyness of the ambiguity of being in a real FWB situation, where it has a chance to turn really messy if someone catches feelings, the other person actually starts dating someone seriously, a new partner finds out their partner's bestie was also banging them, etc. etc. is not really kosher in Japan. So it's actually MORE okay to have a purely transactional but well-defined sexual relationship like a one-night stand, a regular hookup that you never hang out with otherwise, or hiring a straight-up prostitute, than it is to have a FWB.

So yeah, for English speakers, FWB is partially confusing because that's not what they are saying in the manga, and we have a specific definition of that term, even though Japan doesn't, and it's basically the meaning of the label they create for themselves. Most manga readers ARE familiar with the term Sefure, and that it's closer to a Booty call than a FWB, so IMO that would be a better term to use to translate セフレ into. Either Sefure, or Booty Call/Hookup/Fuck Buddy.

That nuance of the term FWB basically not existing in Japan, and it being a pretty big deal to have their own label they created to use, and that the co-worker actually not only comprehending their relationship but being okay with/not judgemental of it, imo gives a lot more impact to this chapter.

sex friends, friends with benefits, ect are relationships that occur in japan and have words that match the english meanings. the translation choice doesn't matter much for this word. they're friends that have sex.

The tonal dissonance of discussing a pretty serious topic about life while getting head is pretty... unique, to say the least.

I wonder how many people have a similar relationship like this in real life, if any.
I have relationships like this, though I'm not currently in one. I don't respect the idea of "mood" and have candid comfortable conversations during sex, it's pleasant and makes me feel comfortable. Sex is a fun activity with performative aspects, not a performance through and through. Though sometimes it is, for special cases.

Can this manga straight up be hentai already? :meguusmug:

I'm surprised that this is under one of Jump's publication. I guess 2.5D Seduction (Ririsa) was right in that you can straight up show sex in Jump now, with Tomoka blatantly sucking cock (which is more ero than sex positions because exposed genitalia).

Also going from Parallel Paradise to this must be a huge detox haha

This end of volume was so well wrapped that it could be even the end of the manga imho. I'm glad there's still more of this masterpiece coming ahead tho

The fact that there's pages and pages of discussion about who is who and what is what highlights the basic problem with the assumption that there are infinite stable relationship statuses and that those statuses are infinitely stable in and of themselves. A relationship involves more than one person across time and circumstance. Ergo, if one of those persons change and if time or circumstance changes, the relationship will likely follow suit. Here's the secret: All of those things change all of the time.

The right people with the correct short- and long-term compatibility with oneanother share certain traits. These people may have complementary personalities, shared goals/aspirations/desires, a healthy tolerance of small perturbations, clear boundaries and ground rules, empathetic diplomacy, elastic grit, and of course, general fondness. Even given all of that, nothing is guaranteed. Thus, you essentially oblige an inherent duty to bind them together - blood, money, marriage, employment, grand effort (such as sport or war).

So, once again, Murata and Tomo are not in a stable relationship because 1. they don't have an inherent duty to one another and 2. they've eschewed higher-order synchrasies in favor of lower ones. And because there is no rule saying you can't be extremely fond of an unstable situation, when it inevitably collapses, one or both of them will be hurt again. You can only live that way for so long until you're numb and broken. Fun is fun, until it isn't...

Esp feeds the horny aro in me so fucking much omg, this manga's been a blessing and a half (esp as most of these kinda things are just oneshot eromanga, or yeh default to romance, or are p sex negative ngl/PUA nonsense)

Plus, what says bestie better than both of yah being free [use] friends for each other X3
