Yeah.. I liked the series but the ending was a big old whimper. Can't find anything about the LN or whatever it's adapted from either.

Or Shaolan and Bao Lei could have kids that he could adopt and raise as his successors. If the Imperial palace can hide the existence of a child, surely faking the narrative that kids are his should be child's play.

Looks like. And it was an ending, that much is true. As the meme goes, it was certainly one of the endings of all time.

Thanks to the TL team, I'm not sure I would have bothered finishing when I saw that ending but they kept the quality the same through the whole thing.

Don't misunderstand, it wasn't a bad ending, it just wasn't a good one either.

Anilist says the LN was only 19 chapters over 2 volumes. Dunno how much extra source material there might be in that. Still agree that it's a pretty limp ending.
