Did she actually follow through on taking his magic? The fact the school wanted her there to stop him from rampaging again sounds like she didn't (or at least they are unaware she did)

Note he DID lunge at her, they likely wanted her there in case he pulled anything else (remember he took items from a KNOWN Magic Terrorist group, who knows if there's some other effect or something, even with his magic gone!

I never said what I said like it was the "Definitive and so all other answers are invalid" But then again, it can also be related to the family in general then her mentor/mother figure! Who knows, it could even be based on her mood as she wasn't in the BEST of moods when they threw her out, compared to growing up where she might have had SOME good will to "those people" till they threw her away to die! Meh let me not get too heated over Theories LOL I tend to get this way when thinking too much LOL

Hey, don't worry about it man. We're all just theorizing, predicting and trying to better understand the story with each other. My initial comment was just that with the information given to us, I don't think it's clear what the relationship between the marquis family kicking Sachi out and the family going into ruin is just yet.

There are no hard contradictions in the story or anything, but there's plenty of room for explanation for the story to get into. It would certainly be interesting if her maxed out luck can negatively influence others, but for all we know there's been a conspiracy against the marquis family where a group of people are trying to take them down for quite some time and Sachi's luck has been preventing their attempts before she was kicked out. Or this could all be the last time we hear about the Grasiel family. Only new chapters will tell...

After his whole rant about needing her luck stat to save the family (and the follow-up attempt at threatening her) I'm a bit disappointed she didn't utilize the truth spell's effects to get him to admit that it was his actions which led to her expulsion from the family.

So are you saying the family was always unlucky to begin with and Sachi's presence counteracted it? (Which would mean the family was unlucky before she was born too.) Or do you mean that the family just happened to be very unlucky over an extended period of time right after they kicked her out? (Which is possible, but basically just comes down to a huge coincidence that doesn't directly relate to the family kicking out Sachi.)

That being said, if we're talking about coincidence then Sachi's luck stat and everything about her is also a huge coincidence (until proven otherwise which it probably will be if we're being honest). Also, the disparity between a territory having their highest highs and the norm is going to be big no matter what. If no one could even figure out why the territory was doing so well in the first place, then it would be reasonable to assume that the marquisate would take greater risks to get back to the same level of prosperity as before and without the magical 999 Luck stat, they can actually fail (depending on the influence Sachi's power has on the world around her).

All of that to say we just be theory crafting.

It sounds to me like what you're describing just comes down to mismanagement of their realm. Every noble family will have to deal with ups and downs in their realm, so under normal circumstances, you'd expect people to invest and save during the good times so that you can weather the bad times. Regular bad luck shouldn't be able to bring down an otherwise prosperous and competent noble family. So that would make me believe that either they weren't competent or the bad luck wasn't normal in some way.

My point when I mentioned "huge coincidence", was that if it turns out that the noble family is just really bad at managing their realm, it would mean that them kicking out Sachi didn't directly cause their downfall. Which seems a bit at odds with how the story seemed to have framed the situation for me (though not impossible).
I mean, if a competent manager who hugely contributed to a company's success retires, it shouldn't be that former manager's fault for retiring if the company fails soon afterwards (assuming he didn't do things like sell company secrets after his retirement).

Wasn’t there a Ringworld novel with a character born with maxed-out luck? So much so, she sucked all the luck out of everyone around her, and she would more or less live forever? I have vague memories of that from my childhood.

Does it make sense though? Either:

• the family is plagued with crazy bad luck that was only countered by Sachi's maxed out luck stat, or
• there's a karma force in effect that cursed the family for throwing away luck like that (perhaps a luck vacuum happens whenever she leaves a place?), or
• by complete sheer coincidence the crazy bad luck happened right after she was kicked out and without her presence they just happened to be defenseless against that bad luck.

While it's all possible, we haven't seen anything that would suggest either the first or second possibilities and the third one would mean that her having been kicked out didn't directly cause the family's sudden misfortune. Heck, the first one shouldn't even be possible if the family was thriving before she was born.

I'm not kicking the story for it, but I will say there's enough room for more clarification imo.

I would believe it's option 2. She might not have wished for it but doing negative things to those with high luck is normally a good way for bad luck to hit you. It's normal to think in a fight if someone wins through pure luck then the side who lost had bad luck.

For option 1. If grisel family was unlucky before they would have kept the child with a maxed out luck Stat. Magic power or talent wouldn't even matter to them. Despite what the norm would face and they would have definitely noticed and locked in on that luck Stat.

Option 3 if it was just a void of bad luck for where she leaves then her adopted mom would be experiencing that bad luck. She spent years with her.
