@Wilhelm_Stenvall You say that but, off the top of your head without looking it up could you name all the materials needed to make a steam engine and a rifle? On top of that you have to know how to put these together and then there's the danger involved in having them around. Even nowadays with all our tech, safety equipment and knowledge people can get seriously injured or killed from a steam engine's malfunction. So imagine how bad things can go without any of those. Another thing: a steam engine and wooden boats don't mix well, so you'd have to make the boats of another material. Do you have any idea just how long it takes to build a single metal ship that actually floats and can be steered properly? There's also the cost of doing something like that, the vast amount of raw material needed, plus the wages of the workers who will being spending months to years building the ship, and that's assuming they got everything right the 1st time and nothing went wrong anywhere in the process, and nobody died in an accident. All of which is highly unlikely to happen because Murphy is a bitch.
Also about the rifles and cannons do you even know the ingredients and mixture ratio to create black powder, let alone gun powder which is a highly refined version? Plus making a gun is no simple matter, the measurements and the quality has to be EXACT down the centimeter or things are going to get very ugly very fast. For example if the barrel is thinner one the top than it is on the bottom it might explode the first time you fire it, or if it fires correctly then it probably won't hit what you were aiming for.
