Reminder that Rin is the older friend of Ruka's brother who took advantage of her when Ruka was a first-year middle school girl (chapter 19). I believe Rin was in the middle of high school or in her final year. So she's all kinds of messed up. This chapter makes her look even worse, which I didn't consider possible.

I sincerely thought we were getting the "let's humanize and whitewash Rin!" arc, and I was amazingly mistaken and happily so. Bad characters just ...being bad, needs to happen more.

Can't wait to see how Rin's story is resolved where it pertains to Ruka & Suuna. Because this makes any outcome of "rehabilitation" seem outlandishly unlikely--and yet I doubt we'll see anything aproaching authoritative consequences being handed down from parents or such.

That's a lot of backstory for someone we very clearly are supposed to hate. Though I do get the first part, it was a tough pill to swallow growing up and I won't deny I'm still kinda bitter.
Indeed.

As much as this manga wants me to hate her for what she did, I cannot. Not when she was neglected not only by her mom (who only calls her older sister, I mean... what the hell mom?) but also by her "friends" and teachers. No wonder she turned like she did due to all that social and mental pressure.

I would be amazed if she finds some sort of redemption in this story.

Can someone explain how someone being neglected by her Mom would develop into this?

The neglect by her mom wouldn't, but I think the implication here is that it's part of a pattern of being dehumanized by others. She feels like she's treated less and less like a person and more like an ideal, so what she wants is to shatter the ideal so even if people hate her they at least approach her as a person.

Also, not everyone hates her, some people, like the third girl in the comparison images, find her hotter knowing how messed up she is.

Yeah I was worried when it opened on her flashback that we would do exactly that. Glad we didn't turn this into some sympathetic thing after what she did. Well for now anyway...
